1. one is (finds o.s. etc) without lodging:

- (out) on <in> the street.

     ♦ ...Соня билась за свою комнату, добилась наконец, дорожит ею, и я не на улице, есть крыша над головой, буду жить у неё и дожидаться, чтобы и мне дали комнату... (Рыбаков 1). Sonya had struggled to get her room and now that she had, it really meant something to her, and, since I wasn't out on the street, but had a roof over my head, I could live with her and wait till they gave me my own place (1a).

2. one is (ends up etc) without work, employment:

- [in limited contexts] out the door.
